Young National Guard Soldier Killed in D.C. Ambush Near White House
20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom dies after Wednesday attack; fellow Guardsman Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition as investigators search for motive.
A tragic shooting just blocks from the White House has claimed the life of 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a young service member who had been on duty in Washington, D.C. the day before Thanksgiving.
Beckstrom, who joined the National Guard in June 2023, was shot during what authorities are calling an ambush on two uniformed service members. She passed away Thursday from her injuries. Her fellow Guardsman, 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, also from West Virginia, remains in critical condition and is still fighting for his life.
President Donald Trump shared the news while speaking to service members in Florida, describing Beckstrom as “highly respected, outstanding in every way, and a magnificent young patriot.” He added that Wolfe is in “very bad shape” and asked Americans to pray for him.
Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. legally in 2021 under humanitarian parole through Operation Allies Welcome after the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Lakanwal was also critically wounded and is currently in custody.
The shooting triggered a temporary lockdown of the White House as federal agencies rushed to secure the area. Investigators are still determining the motive.
Across the country, leaders expressed sadness and outrage over the loss. FBI Director Kash Patel called Beckstrom “a young soldier and patriot with her entire life ahead of her.” War Secretary Pete Hegseth described her as “an American hero,” and Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed that “America will never forget her courage.”
Our hearts are with Sarah Beckstrom’s family, friends, and fellow soldiers who are grieving an unimaginable loss. A 20-year-old who stepped forward to serve her country should be coming home for the holidays not being honored in tragedy. We also lift up Andrew Wolfe as he continues fighting for his life, and we keep his loved ones in our prayers. No family should ever have to receive the kind of call these families did this week.
